Lower House honors Pnoy by suspending second day of session

A day after resuming regular session, the House of Representatives honored the late President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III with an early suspension of session on Tuesday, July 27.

Congressmen stood for the singing of the national anthem and prayers before Deputy Majority Leader and Pampanga Rep. Juan Pablo Bondoc declared the suspension of the session at 3 pm.

“In deference to the passing of former President Benigno S. Aquino III who is also a member of the House of Representatives in the 11th, 12th and 13th Congress, the session is suspended until 3 o’clock in the afternoon tomorrow, July 28,” Bondoc said.

Aquino had served as deputy speaker of the chamber but decided to give up the post to dramatize his decision to oppose the administration of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that was rocked by the “Hello Garci” scandal at the time.

The 15th president of the republic succumbed to renal failure secondary to diabetes at the age of 61.

Before his election as president, the former congressman from Tarlac also served as senator.

Among the first measures acted upon by the Senate after resuming regular session on Monday was the adoption of the resolution honoring the late president.

There are seven proposed resolutions of condolences that are pending in the Lower House. These will be referred to the proper committee for deliberation as soon as presented for first reading in the plenary.

One legislative measure called on the Lower House to honor the life and legacy of Aquino. The resolution was filed by Parañaque City Rep. Joy Myra S. Tambunting.
