Recently crowned Olympic weightlifting gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz turned to one of the most important people in her life after that historic achievement in Tokyo Monday night – her mother, Emelita.
In a phone interview with radio program TeleRadyo on Tuesday, the elder Diaz said she had talked to her daughter moments after being awarded the gold medal – the country’s first since joining the Olympiad in 1924.
“Sabi niya, mag-ingat lang kami palagi dito,” Emelita said.
The elder Diaz said they were able to catch her daughter’s golden performance on television, adding that they have always been praying for her safety and success everyday.
Diaz has been away from her family for more than a year, training extensively in a camp in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“Araw-araw kaming nagdadasal para sa kanya kasi matagal siyang nahiwalay sa amin,” said Emelita, who lives in Zamboanga City where Hidilyn was born and raised along with five siblings.
A hero’s welcome and several public appearances await Hidilyn once she arrives from Tokyo, but Emelita said they would just wait for her daughter to be home in Zamboanga City instead of welcoming her in Manila.
“Hintayin na lang namin siya dito sa Zamboanga. Takot din kami sa (COVID-19). Dito na lang kami sa bahay,” said Emelita.
Emelita also thanked everyone who supported her daughter from the start.
“Maraming salamat sa mga nagdasal sa kanya, kasi hindi rin siya mananalo kung wala ang mga dasal ng mga tao,” she said.
Diaz captured the country’s first Olympic gold medal in the women’s 55kg after lifting an Olympic record of 224 kilograms to best world record-holder Liao Qiuyun of China (223) and Kazakhstan’s Zulfiya Chinshanlo (213).
