Zubiri in dilemma after getting invited to opposition, admin Senate slates
Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri bared Monday, July 26, that he has also accepted the invitation of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte's Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) to be one of the regional party's senatorial bets for the 2022 elections.

Zubiri, who is set to run for reelection next year, said House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco spoke to him about his inclusion in the HNP's senatorial slate.
"And I’ve accepted also their invitation to be part of their slate. Lalo na taga-Mindanao po ako (Especially I'm from Mindanao)," the senator told members of the media during a virtual briefing.
"I will be honored to be part also of the team. Kung kailangan pong mag-attend ng kanilang (If I need to attend their) selection process, why not?" he said
Zubiri also disclosed that the 1Sambayan, which plans to field a single opposition slate for 2022, has reached out to him.
Unlike his willingness to join the HNP slate, however, Zubiri said he has yet to decide whether or not to accept the opposition coalition's invitation.
"Hindi pa at this point in time. Ayoko kasi ma-label, at this point in time, na administration, opposition. Kasi ano ako, independent ako (Not yet at this point time. because I don't want to be labelled, at this point in time, as being part of the administration or the opposition. Because I'm independent)," he explained.
"I am honored and, of course, very happy and elated na marami ang gustong mag-adopt sa akin (that many parties want to adopt me in their slate)," he said of the 1Sambayan's communication.
Sara Duterte is being pushed to run for president next year. She confimed earlier this month that she is open to it, although she maintained that she has yet to decide.
Velasco, who vowed to support the mayor's possible presidential bid, is a member of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) currently chaired by the President Duterte.
Members of the ruling party, meanwhile, have urged the Chief Executive to run for vice president, triggering the possibility of a Duterte-Duterte tandem in 2022.
Zubiri is also part of the senatorial lineup of the upcoming election tandem of indepedent Senator Panfilo Lacson and Senate President Vicente Sotto III, who chairs the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC).
The NPC has yet to meet and decided whether or not adopt the senatorial candidates to be endorsed by Sotto.
"I have no problems working with anyone who wins this 2022," Zubiri said, saying it will not be the first time, if ever, that different political parties carried his name.
Earlier, Zubiri said he and some possible candidates were planning to campaign independently in 2022.
