Robredo hails Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz

Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday, July 26, proudly congratulated Hidilyn Diaz who captured the country’s first ever Olympic gold medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Robredo was beaming with pride for the Philippines after Diaz delivered the breakthrough gold in the weightlifting competition.

“Big win for the Philippines!! Thank you for making us proud, Hidilyn,” she said in a Facebook post with an emoticon of the Philippine flag.

Diaz, the 30-year-old native of Zamboanga City, successfully lifted 127kgs—an Olympic record in the clean and jerk that gave her the victory.

The female weightlifter recorded 97kgs in the snatch. She had a total lift of 224kgs that sent an Olympic record.

In 2016 Rio Olympics, Diaz was a silver medalist that ended the Philippines’ 20-year drought.

In a Twitter post, the vice president shared the video of Diaz who saluted the Philippine flag as the national anthem Lupang Hinirang was played for the first time at the Olympics.

“What a proud moment for our country,” Robredo said.
