Livelihood, economy top list of issues Filipinos want to hear in Duterte's final SONA - survey

Livelihood and the economy topped the list of issues that Filipino adults want to hear from President Duterte’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA), latest Pulse Asia survey showed.

The survey result showed that Filipino adults would most like to hear President Duterte discuss the creation of more jobs (38 percent) and the Philippine economy (35 percent) in his upcoming SONA on Monday, July 26.

These were followed by issues cited by Filipino adults pertaining to measures to control inflation (33 percent) and plans to expedite the government’s coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination program (31 percent).

“A third set of issues includes increasing workers’ pay (26 percent), improving the educational system (26 percent), measures to be taken to prevent further Chinese incursion into the country’s territory in the West Philippine Sea (25 percent), and fighting corruption in government (24 percent),” Pulse Asia said.

“Meanwhile, peace (20 percent), illegal drugs (17 percent), and public trust in the government and its officials (16 percent) make up a fourth group of issues. The least often mentioned issue is Charter change (7 percent),” it added.

The pollster noted that the national survey was conducted from June 7 to 16 using face-to-face interviews of 2,400 representative adults 18 years old and above.

For the survey, the respondents were asked: “What would you like for President Duterte to discuss or mention in his coming State of the Nation Address or SONA?”

According to poll results, Metro Manila residents would most like for the President to talk about inflation (48 percent) and livelihood (40 percent) in his last SONA.

For the rest of Luzon, the most preferred issues listed by the respondents are the economy (39 percent), jobs (37 percent), the educational system (34 percent), and inflation (33 percent).

As for those in the Visayas, the most cited issues they want the President to discuss are jobs (41 percent), COVID-19 vaccination (39 percent), and the economy (33 percent).

“And in Mindanao, basically the same percentages of adult residents would most like to hear the President discuss the following issues in his July 2021 address before Congress – jobs (36 percent), the economy (32 percent), COVID-19 vaccination (31 percent), inflation (28 percent), pay of workers (28 percent), and peace (28 percent),” said Pulse Asia.
