Gavina wants RoS to become the 'hardest working team in the PBA'

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters continue to dominate early in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup, sharing the lead with the Magnolia Hotshots with unbeaten 3-0 records.

RoS coach Chris Gavina lauded his wards for setting that "gold standard" heading into the 46th Season amid the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that their wins are the fruits of labor from their preparation in the past months.

"'Yong expectation, just like any other teams, it's extremely high," said Gavina after the Elasto Painters routed, 85-72, the Meralco Bolts at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City on Saturday, July 24.

Gavina also has his own goal for the team's image since taking over coaching duties last March -- to become the hardest working team in the PBA.

Citing US NCAA champion coach Bobby Knight, Gavina said, "The most prepared teams are the hardest working teams. They coincide with who we are and what our identities ."

Beau Belga, now considered as the team's veteran player and leader, for his part, said the key to their recent wins is to trust Gavina's system, the chemistry he wanted for the team, as well as the culture they wanted to build.

"Everybody's into it. 'Yon siguro 'yong nagiging sikreto," said Belga, who scored 17 points to with 10 rebounds and a pair of assist and steal.

"Tapos ginugusto namin. Every game ginugusto namin na talagang dumepensa kami. When it comes to offense talagang sinasabi namn na i-execute natin hanggang sa kung sino talaga 'yong pinakalibre."

Javee Mocon led the Elasto Painters with 18 points, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals while Rey Nambatac and Norbert Torres chipped in 11 points apiece.
