DTI chief on stricter quarantine status vs Delta variant: 'A good balancing act'
A good balancing act between maintaining the country’s economic recovery and protecting Filipinos against the dreaded Delta variant of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

That's how Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez described the reimposition of a general community quarantine (GCQ) "with heightened restrictions" on five areas in the country, including the National Capital Region (NCR), until July 31, 2021.
The government's pandemic task force made the move as a way of pre-empting the local spread of the highly-contagious and potentially deadlier Delta variant.
"We appreciate also the good balancing act of the IATF with the help of the health expert na yung ating restriction naka-focus lang karamihan dito sa mga non-essential activities na binabawasan natin, especially itong mga super-spreader events (our restrictions are focused mainly on lessening non-essential activities, especially these super-spreader events)," Lopez said late Saturday night, July 24 during President Duterte's pre-recorded public briefing.
"But what is important to the extent possible, we are allowing economic activities to continue. I think that is very important Mr. President. Hindi naman natin sinasara lahat ng mga operations importers, mga BPOs , mga manufacturing, tuloy-tuloy po ito (We are not closing entirely the operations of importers, BPOs, and the manufacturing industry, they will be continuous)," he noted.
"And that I think is the balance we are managing here Mr. President. As long as they all follow minimum health protocol standards, mame-maintain natin hopefully itong momentum that we are enjoying right now na nakakabawi naman ang ating economy...unti-unti na pong nakakabangon (hopefully we will maintain this momentum that we are enjoying right now because our economy has been recovering...it's slowly getting back on its feet)," Lopez explained.
The DTI chief further said that the stricter quarantine protocol will spare the Philippines from having to undergo nightmare situations with the Delta variant like what happened to other countries in Asia.
"Hopefully ma-maintain natin itong balance and to allow the economy to continue (Hopefully we can maintain this balance to allow the economy to continue)," Lopez said.
