DOST's bamboo shoot production technology to provide livelihood to women's groups in Central Luzon

Women’s organizations in Central Luzon are expected to benefit from the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) bamboo shoot production and product development project.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the DOST-III is forging partnership with three women’s organizations in the Central Luzon for the adoption of the technologies developed by the Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU) for livelihood.

“The project will assist displaced workers and those severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through the conduct of research and extension services on bamboo shoot production and product development,” he said in a report.

He noted that the technologies to be adopted were developed from the project funded by the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development-PCAARRD. The project is entitled: “Development of Strategies for Propagules and Shoot Production of Three Bamboo Species in Pampanga.”

Involved in the project are the Magalang Bamboo Association, Soroptomist International, Ayala San Augustin Farmers Association.

“These groups are being capacitated through conduct of trainings on bamboo production, processing, packaging and marketing,” de la Peña said.

Under the project, the PSAU is expected to provide initial quality planting materials.
