Animal shelter groups appeal for pets' safety amid heavy rains, flood

Two animal shelter organizations have appealed to residents to take their pets to safe areas amid the continuous heavy rains caused by southwest monsoon or “habagat.”

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) urged evacuees to include their pets in evacuation plans as heavy downpour caused massive flood affected some parts of the country on Saturday, July 24.

“It has been raining almost non-stop for the past two days and flood waters continue to rise in many areas of Metro Manila. We urge all pet owners to be prepared and choose to err on the side of caution when questions of whether or not they should evacuate come up,” the PAWS said in a Facebook post on Saturday, July 24.

“Evacuation plans must include all members of the family- most especially, our companion animals,” it added.

The animal shelter group encouraged owners to unchain and not put their pets in cages if they will not be able to bring them in evacuation areas.

“If you are not able to bring your pets for any reason, please make sure they are not chained or caged so that they stand a good chance of saving themselves,” the PAWS said.

Meanwhile, the Animal Kingdom Foundation appealed to the public to let animals take temporary shelter in their homes and business establishments amid the inclement weather condition.

“Please let us open our hearts and our homes especially to the homeless animals who just want temporary shelter,” the Capas, Tarlac based animal shelter said in a Facebook post.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday morning, July 25, the southwest monsoon or “habagat” enhanced by typhoon “In-fa” (formerly “Fabian”) may continue to bring rains over most of Luzon in the next 24 hours.

PAGASA advised seafarers and fisherfolk to remain alert as sea conditions, especially over the western seaboard of Luzon may become rough during severe offshore thunderstorms.
