'Habagat' rains persist across most of Luzon

The southwest monsoon or "habagat" bolstered by typhoon "Fabian" (international name "In-fa") may continue to induce monsoon rains and affect several parts of Luzon within 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11 a.m. weather advisory issued on Saturday, July 24.

PAGASA said the habagat may bring heavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Zambales and Bataan in the next 24 hours.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains may also prevail over Metro Manila, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Oriental Mindoro, and Occidental Mindoro.

Meanwhile, light to moderate with at times heavy rains may affect Laguna, Rizal, Quezon, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Marinduque, Romblon, and northern Palawan including Calamian Islands.

"Under these conditions, scattered to widespread flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA warned.

Occasional gusty conditions associated with the enhanced southwest monsoon may also prevail over most of Luzon, especially in coastal and upland areas.

Although typhoon Fabian has already left the country's area of responsibility at around 11 p.m., Friday, July 23, it may still continue to enhance the effect of the southwest monsoon in the next few days.
