Rule hopes to make a splash

TOKYO — Fil-Am Remedy Rule, a marine biology graduate at University of Texas at Austin, will seek a place in the semifinals of the 100-meter butterfly event as the swimming competition in the XXXII Olympiad creates a big splash Saturday at the Tokyo Aquatics Center.

Rule, 24, who earned a berth to the Olympics through universality places after emerging as the top female Filipino swimmer based on the International Swimming Federation (FINA) points, will join gymnast Carlos Yulo, boxer Nesthy Petecio and taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa in making their debuts on Day 2 of the Games.

She will race in lane No. 2 on Heat 2 alongside Jeserik Pinto of Venezuela, Dalma Sebestyen of Hungary, Ellen Walshe of Ireland, Miriam Sheehan of Puerto Rico and Luana Alonso of Paraguay.

Rule is a native of Crozet, Va., but her mother was born in the Philippines, making her eligible for Filipino citizenship.

“I felt I had more to give on the long course stage. I wanted to swim post college representing a team and the Philippines gave me that opportunity,” she said in an article that came out in a swimming magazine.

“It’s special being able to swim for the Philippines. I get to do what I love, swimming, and connect with my culture on my mom’s side. I’ve felt a unique connection meeting my Filipino teammates having a shared background.”

A winner of three silver and two bronze medals in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, Rule is also scheduled to compete in the 200m butterfly on July 27.

Fil-Kiwi Luke Gebbie, 24, the other swimmer in the Philippine team, will make his appearance in the pool on June 27 for the men’s 100m freestyle, where he will swim on Heat 5, and on July 30 for the men’s 50m freestyle on Heat 4.
