Gov't calls for more outdoor dining and recreational areas

In a bid to promote public health and safe economic activities amid the coronavirus pandemic, the government is pushing for greater public access to outdoor spaces for dining, recreation, among others.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) has appealed to establishments to free up space for outdoor activities and create urban green areas.

“To enable the safe continuity of economic activities, the IATF asked establishments to consider developing and converting more outdoor spaces into temporary outdoor weekend markets and dining spaces,” Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said in a statement Friday.

The government also called for the establishment of “permanently accessible urban green spaces, outdoor recreational spaces and public sanitation facilities," according to Roque.

The latest appeal came as the government tightened movement controls in Metro Manila to contain the spread of the highly transmissible Delta coronavirus variant in the country. Health authorities earlier confirmed the local transmission of the Delta variant in the country after recording 47 cases of the contagious disease.
