Special exhibits for the Special Edition

July 25, 2021 marks the beginning of the eight-day online art fair that will feature over 10,000 artworks from 62 galleries. Among them are Art in the Park’s featured artists. Get to know them below.

Antipas Delotavo for Art in the Park

Antipas Delotavo

Art in the Park Online 2021, Special Edition will present “Gridlock,” a special exhibit of new paintings on canvas by renowned social realist, Antipas Delotavo. These pieces take on the appearance of collages and contain rich visual detail, drawn out of the artist’s commitment to the study of nameless citizens that contribute to the nation.

"Iris" by Leeroy New

Leeroy New and Anna Bautista for Globe Platinum Hour

Also featured is the multi-hyphenate Leeroy New, a creative tour de force who works in fashion, film, theater, production design, performance, and of course, the visual arts. He has three projects lined up for Art in the Park Online.

Leeroy will give Manila’s art lovers a glimpse of “Mebuyan Vessel Polyp,” set to be installed at Art in the Park’s homebase of Jaime Velasquez Park for the duration of the online fair. The public art installation is a sneak peek of a much more ambitious piece arising in La Union later this year, that of which will be New’s participation for “Burning Man,” the annual event’s online edition.

The online art fair will also unveil its first foray into augmented reality (AR), through “Aliens of Manila,” one of Leeroy’s celebrated headpieces originally fabricated from colorful plastic containers, making its debut as an Instagram filter. In addition, “Iris” is his online exhibit of mirror pieces available at Art in the Park’s website. He describes this as “a series of magic mirror sculptures conjured while in lockdown. Mirrors as portals, as windows to the soul and other worlds. Eyes with mascara melting the way reality dissolves.” You can have a peek at Leeroy’s artistic practice by tuning in to Globe Platinum Hour 8 p.m. daily.

"Time Capsules by Anna Bautista

Also taking the spotlight for Globe Platinum Hour is young visual artist, Anna Bautista, with “Time Capsules.” Bautista’s work tackles the concept of time, culture, and philosophy—and how these elements are all interlinked and constantly respond to each other. Spurred by the spirit of gratitude, Anna conceptualized “Time Capsules,” carried out in both canvas and textile, creating images symbolic of this unsettling period both as a tribute to those in the frontlines and as a record that can be looked back upon.

Globe Platinum Hour for Kids

Art in the Park welcomes back Robert Alejandro. The very popular “Teacher Robert” will once again host a special session for the junior set on Saturday, July 31, 2021, 10 a.m.

Artwork by Eugenia Alcaide (Cotton thread on 2 layers of silkscreen)

BPI Art Clips features Adrift by Eugenia Alcaide

Rounding up this edition’s special exhibits is “Adrift,” Eugenia Alcaide’s entirely new vision of threadwork in an ocean of surreal, electric color.

Eugenia broke into the art scene almost a decade ago through Art in the Park through her portraits with the use of thread. “Adrift” will be a showcase of her pioneering techniques in layered threadwork, as she weaves intricate compositions of “Doubt, despair, and desolation,” in an exploration of how people can be connected and adrift at the same time.

Art in the Park Special Edition

Art in the Park is organized by Philippine Art Events, Inc., for the benefit of the Museum Foundation of The Philippines Inc. (MFPI), in partnership with Globe Platinum and Bank of The Philippine Islands with support from MACEA and Barangay Bel Air.
