After delays, Obiena finally arrives in Tokyo

Philippines' top pole vaulter EJ Obiena has finally arrived in Tokyo, Japan after delays due to strict travel restrictions.

Obiena took his excitement to social media, thanking "everyone who have went out their way to make this a possibility."

As seen on his latest Instagram story, the 25-year-old Tondo native revealed that he and his team are about to enter the Olympic Village.

Obiena, the first athlete to qualify in the Tokyo Games, is the most recent Filipino competitor to arrive in Japan.

Others yet to arrive are golfers Bianca Pagdanganan, Yuka Saso, and Juvic Pagunsan.

Obiena, ranked No. 6 in the world, is set to see action next Saturday, July 31, at the Olympic Stadium starting 8:40 am.

Tough competition is up for Obiena as he locks horns with world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden, reigning Olympic champion Thiago Braz of Brazil, three-time world indoor champion Renaud Lavillenie of France, and two-time world champion Sam Kendricks of the United States, among others.
