Women's groups mourn death of 'Nanay Mameng'

Women's groups have mourned the death of urban poor leader Carmen Deunida also known as "Nanay Mameng."

Deunida passed away on Monday, July 19, at the age of 93.

She served as the chairwoman-emeritus of Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay).

Center for Women's Resources (CWR) honored "Nanay Mameng" as the "fighter for the rights of the urban poor for housing."

"Her dedication to the struggle will remain an inspiration to generations of activists, organizers, and rights defenders in pursuing genuine social transformation."

Her fellow activists best remember Deunida for her "sharpness."

"Hinangaan at saludo sa kanya ang maraming aktibista at masa maging ang mga kilalang personalidad at pulitiko kapag sya ang tumatayo sa entablado at nagsasalita (Many activists and masses admire her as well as well-known personalities and politicians when she stands and speaks on stage)," AMIHAN National Chairperson Zen Soriano said in a statement.

"May angkin syang karisma at hindi nangingiming makihalubilo at makipagtalakayan kahit kanino (She has charisma and not hesitant to socialize with anyone)," Soriano added.

Gabriela Youth hailed Deunida as "an inspiration to the youth."

"Inspirasyon ka sa lahat ng kabataang kababaihang nakikibaka para sa pambansang demokrasya. Ikaw ang mukha, ang simbolo, ang huwaran ng pakikibaka ng maralita sa kalunsuran!"

Deunida started her activism during the Marcos dictatorship in 1978.

She also led protests against the Estrada government in EDSA II.
