An official of the Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday, July 22, said that the enrollment for students in public schools this incoming school year might start next month.

“Usually two weeks before ,” Undersecretary for Planning and Human Resource and Organizational Development Jesus L.R Mateo told the Manila Bulletin in a Viber message.

“We are proposing probably 16 Aug but subject to issuance of enrollment policy,” Mateo added.

Remote enrollment

In light of the emergence of contagious variants of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country, it is expected that DepEd will implement a remote enrollment system for the incoming school year.

As part of the opening preparations this school year, DepEd conducted the early registration last March to May participated in by 4.5 million incoming Kinder, Grades 1, 7 and 11 learners.

However, DepEd noted that for the rest of the grade levels, there will still be an official enrollment period. All students who wish to enroll for SY 2021-2022, even those who participated in the early registration, will still be required to formally enroll once the enrollment period starts.

In SY 2020-2021, DepEd data showed that there were 26.6 million enrollees in the basic education level - both in public and private schools. This number is lower compared to the 27.7 million enrollment for SY 2019-2020.

For the first time, DepEd conducted remote enrollment in SY 2020-2021 to ensure the safety of learners, parents, and teachers.

During the first two weeks of June 2020, the remote enrollment was implemented through alternative means of communication that do not require physically reporting to school, such as text, call, email, and online messaging.

To accommodate those who do not have access to remote means, DepEd allowed physical enrollment on the third week. In coordination with the Local Government Units (LGUs), physical enrollment platforms were established by the schools.

Meanwhile, drop boxes and kiosks in barangay halls and schools were also put up so parents may pick up or drop off the Learner Enrollment and Survey Form (LESF) as part of the enrollment requirements.

Last week, DepEd announced that President Duterte has approved Sept. 13, 2021 as opening date for School Year 2021-2022 among the options recommended by Education Secretary Briones.

Following the decision of the President to postpone the implementation of limited face-to-face classes in low-risk areas, DepEd said that “enhanced blended learning” will continue to be implemented this incoming school year.

Under blended learning, students learn their lessons at home using multiple learning delivery modalities such as modular (printed and offline), online learning, television and radio-based instruction or a combination of two or more learning delivery modalities.
