Dela Rosa, Abueva need consistency, says Magnolia coach

Magnolia coach Chito Victolero lauded his wards Rome Dela Rosa and Calvin Abueva for their huge contributions on both ends of the floor but reminded them to work on their consistency.

Dela Rosa scored 12 points with six rebounds and a pair of assists and steals while Abueva chalked up nine markers and 10 boards in the Hotshot's 84-82 win against the Alaska Aces in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Arena in Pasig City on Wednesday night, July 22.

Nonetheless, Victolero was satisfied with how Dela Rosa performed and commended the 6-foot-3 swingman for delivering defensive stops and securing the important shots.

"I'm very happy with Rome, 'yan talaga 'yong trinabaho namin noong offseason," said Victolero. "'Yong kanyang offense. Kasi sa depensa, wala kaming problema kay Rome. I mean he can defend anybody doon sa ano mang positions, 1-2-3-4-5.

"But 'yong offense niya, 'yon 'yong trinabaho namin the offseason and ngayon lumalabas na. I think na-spread niya 'yong floor, maganda 'yong shooting niya. I'm very happy because 'yong kumpiyansa niya nandyan na so tuloy-tuloy lang siguro," added the 2018 Governor's Cup champion coach.

As for Abueva, Victolero said the former Phoenix star is now serving as the team's energizer bunny which was also evident during his double-double performance on his Magnolia debut.

In the second game, however, Abueva was nearly fouled out when needed the most at the 2:36 mark of the payoff period before Alaska's Yousef Taha converted a lay up to trail by one 80-79.

But thanks to the heroics of Ian Sangalang, Magnolia survived Alaska with a game-winning lay up off a Paul Lee pass.

"Calvin helped us a lot. He played multiple positions, he gives us the energy. Malaking factor sa amin 'yong nabibigay ni Calvin sa laro namin," explained Victolero.

"But na-foul trouble lang si Calvin ngayon. Hopefully, he can manage his fouls on our next games." (Carlo Anolin)
