Team PH doctor downplays Magno's foot injury

TOKYO — The reported foot injury suffered by national boxer Irish Magno while skipping rope during training Monday was labelled as nothing more than a “misstep” by Team Philippines’ Dr. Randy Molo.

“No need for x-rays,” Molo, an orthopedic surgeon, said on Wednesday. “I gave her some pain killers but she didn’t need them.

“I believe Irish had resumed training with the national team.”

The extent of the injury, minor as it was and how it would affect her fitness, remains unknown though.

Apparently wearing rubber shoes not suited for skipping rope training, Magno, who is entered in the 51kg flyweight category and the second boxer after featherweight Nesthy Petecio scheduled for action in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, had landed awkwardly on her right foot and stumbled.

National women’s team coach Boy Velasco broke her fall and promptly had the foot iced. Fellow national boxer Eumir Felix Marcial then helped Magno up on her feet before Molo was summoned.

“She hurt the dorsum of her right foot,” said Molo, referring to the top of the foot by its medical term.

“It wasn’t a sprain and was really just a minor misstep.”

National coaches Reynaldo Galido, a veteran of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and two-time SEA Games silver medalist Elmer Pamisa confirmed Magno took the rest of Monday off but had resumed training Tuesday.

“Ibang sapatos kasi nagamit ni Irish dahil galing sila sa lakad papunta sa gym,” said Galido. “Me konting alalay lang siya sa paa niya pero balik ensayo na siya.”

The drawing of lots for the boxing competition is Thursday.
