Residents near Pasig, Marikina, Tullahan rivers warned of possible flooding due to monsoon rains

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Wednesday morning, July 21, warned residents living near the Pasig, Marikina, and Tullahan rivers to take precaution against possible flooding due to rains triggered by the southwest monsoon or "habagat."

PAGASA issued a flood advisory for Pasig, Marikina, Tullahan rivers and their tributaries, particularly in the following areas:

  • Upper Marikina River - Rodriguez, Antipolo, and San Mateo, Rizal; Quezon City; and Marikina City
  • Lower Marikina River - Pasig City and Mandaluyong City
  • Pasig River - Pasig City, Makati City, Mandaluyong City, and Manila City
  • Tullahan River - Quezon City, Caloocan City, Malabon City, Navotas City, and Valenzuela City
  • Mango River - Rodriguez, Rizal
  • Nangka River - Marikina City; San Mateo and Antipolo, Rizal
  • San Juan River - Quezon City, San Juan, and Manila City

PAGASA said that local flooding is possible in some areas due to poor drainage systems and impounding water.

"People living near the mountain slopes and in the low-lying areas of the abovementioned cities and local disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned are advised to be alert to take appropriate actions," PAGASA said in its flood advisory.

PAGASA said the southwest monsoon or "habagat," which is continuously being enhanced by typhoon "Fabian" and severe tropical storm "Cempaka," is expected to prevail and bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Metro Manila and several parts of the country.

As of 11 a.m., heavy rainfall warnings were issued over parts of Luzon.

Orange warning - flooding is threatening

  • Metro Manila
  • Bataan
  • Cavite
  • Zambales

Yellow warning - flooding in flood-prone areas

  • Laguna (San Pedro, Biñan, Santa Rosa, Cabuyao, Calamba, Los Baños
  • Tarlac
  • Pampanga
  • Bulacan
  • Batangas
  • Rizal

PAGASA said that light to moderate with occasional heavy rains may affect these areas within three hours.
