Sacrifice in times of trials: DND, AFP highlight importance of unity on Eid'l Adha

The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) celebrated Eid'l Adha or the "Feast of Sacrifice" on Tuesday, July 20, with a hope that Filipinos, regardless of religion, will remain united to pursue progress and development for the country.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the celebration stressed the importance of "unwavering devotion, fortitude, and unity in times of trials."

"It is a chance for us to reflect on our values, with this auspicious day inspiring us to look beyond the comforts of our own lives and reach out to others in the spirit of empathy and service," he said.

"May the observance of Eid al Adha remind us all Filipinos here and abroad to look out for one another, and forgo our differences for the peace and progress of our nation," he added.

On Monday, Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), said the true essence of Eid'l Adha was best demonstrated when Muslim civilians risked their lives and rescued several soldiers who were aboard a C-130 military plane that crashed in Patikul, Sulu last July 4.

Meanwhile, Police Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), was hopeful that the celebration of Eid'l Adha would serve as a reminder of the security forces' aspiration to provide a safer and more secure environment for all Filipinos.

"May the sacrifice of Allah inspire all of you with courage and strength. May this blessed day bring unity and spiritual tranquility to everyone as we move forward to a peaceful, orderly, and progressive country," Eleazar said.

President Duterte declared July 20 as a regular holiday across the country in observance of Eid'l Adha, which is considered as one of the most important holidays in Islam.

The feast commemorates the willingness of prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, Ishmail (Ishmael), as an act of obedience to Allah's (God) command.
