Malacañang assured the public that it was closely monitoring the situation in Taal after President Duterte joked that he will plug the restive volcano's crater.

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque made the statement after thousands of people started to evacuate due to the unrest of Taal Volcano.

In his statement, Roque assured the public that the Palace was closely monitoring the developments as he ensured that evacuation activities were already taking place.

"We are closely monitoring the situation in Taal after the phreatomagmatic eruptions that occurred in Taal Volcano," he said.

"Evacuation activities in high-risk barangays in Laurel and Agoncillo as well as in other nearby municipalities in Batangas province are ongoing," he added.

The Palace official likewise asked residents near the area to remain vigilant and coordinate with their respective local government units (LGUs) for updates.

"We ask residents in the areas surrounding the volcano lake to remain vigilant, take precautionary measures, cooperate with their local authorities should the need for evacuation arise," Roque said.

According to Roque, LGUs have been leading the efforts on the ground through their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices with the support of counterparts in the line agencies.

In his speech on Thursday, July 1, President Duterte joked that he would put a cap on the volcano's crater.

"Hindi ko malaman kung, dumaan man kami kanina, konti lang. Siguro lagyan ko lang ng cap, yung butas (I don't know if... we passed there a while ago, just for a short while. Perhaps I will just put a cap on the crater)," he said.

Despite making light of the situation, Duterte assured the public that the government always has "an exigency measure" and was ready to provide aid in any possible calamity.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 4-A was placed on heightened alert and has stockpiles of relief support consisting of food packs amounting to P1.4 million and non-food items worth P11 million.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines Southern Luzon Command has activated Joint Task Force Taal to assist operations of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and the local government units.

The Philippine National Police in CALABARZON has been placed on alert and is coordinating with local government units to assist residents.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Logistics Systems Command, on the other hand, has already deployed vehicles and personnel to support the PCG District Southern Tagalog in the conduct of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
