Group calls for organized vaccination for teachers, other school personnel

A teachers group on Friday, July 2, urged the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to ensure that the vaccination for education personnel will be seamless and organized.

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC), a 30,000-strong group, said that currently, teachers have to endure long queues in the vaccination areas designated by their respective local government units (LGUs) in order to get their coronavirus disease (COVID-19) jabs.

Given this, TDC called on the DepEd and CHED to “make vaccines seamlessly available to all the teachers” who are willing to get the shots in both public and private schools.

“The more than a million teachers and other school personnel who are actively working and interacting with their respective communities, once vaccinated, could boost the herd immunity,” TDC National Chairperson Benjo Basas said.

“This should also be a prerequisite before the implementation of any plan for a face to face classes- whether limited, selective or dry-run,” he added.

Meanwhile, TDC commended DepEd Region XI leadership for spearheading the vaccination of its teachers and personnel against the COVID-19. Basas said that the recent vaccination of teachers in Davao City may be the “first of such kind” in the entire DepEd system.

“This should be replicated in every DepEd region and division,” Basas said. “Teachers being the front liners of education should also be given priority in vaccination and such vaccination should be institutional, since every teacher belongs to priority A4 category,” he added.

Basas also underscored the importance of “proper coordination between” the DepEd, Department of Health (DOH) field offices and the LGUs.

Likewise, TDC reminded the DepEd once again that teachers’ health, with or without the pandemic is a government obligation under the Magna Carta for Public School Teachers (RA 4670), a law that has been ignored for over five decades.

“This COVID-19 pandemic exposes the decades-long neglect to our teachers’ well-being,” Basas added.
