Vietnam's daily COVID-19 infections surge to new high

HANOI, Vietnam -- Vietnam reported another record high of 5,926 new COVID-19 infections on Sunday, surpassing the previous record of 3,718 cases registered on Saturday, according to the country's Ministry of Health.

The new infections included 5,887 locally transmitted and 39 imported, bringing the total tally to 53,830, with 254 deaths, the ministry said.

Among the community cases, 4,692 were reported in the southern epicenter Ho Chi Minh City, 345 in the nearby southern Binh Duong province, and 147 in the southern Dong Nai province.

Nationwide, 10,667 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered, up 355 from Saturday.

As of Sunday, Vietnam has registered a total of 51,771 domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases, including 50,201 detected since the start of the latest outbreak in late April, according to the health ministry.

Following the detection of new COVID-19 outbreaks in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi and the complication of the situation nationwide, authorities of Hanoi on Sunday announced that lockdown measures will be applied from Monday. Under the lockdown, all non-essential services will be suspended, people should stay at home and only go out for basic necessities such as buying food or medicines or going to work at factories or businesses that are allowed to open.
