“Malaki iyong naging karanasan at mga aral natin nitong pagsasagawa nitong katatapos lamang na school year 2020-2021 (We have experienced a lot and we learned lessons from the recent school year 2020-2021),” DepEd Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Nepomuceno Malaluan during the Laging Handa public briefing on Monday, July 19.

“At iyong mga aral na iyan ang ating magsisilbing gabay para ma-improve natin iyong delivery (And those lessons will serve as a guide for us to improve the delivery),” he added.

For School Year (SY) 2021-2022 set to open on Sept. 13, Malaluan said that DepEd will still be using the streamlined curriculum or the “Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs).

Under the Basic Education -Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) implemented last school year, the MELCs served as the primary reference of all schools to determine and implement learning delivery approaches that are “suited to the local context and diversity of learners” while adapting to the challenges brought by COVID-19.

Malaluan noted that other challenges, such as quality assurance of learning materials and other resources, will be addressed based on DepEd’s experience during SY 2020-2021 which formally ended on July 10.

DepEd, he added, is also looking forward to reducing the dependence on printed learning this incoming school year. Under the distance learning set-up, lessons are delivered to the learners using modular learning (printed and offline), online learning, television and radio-based instruction or the combination of two or more delivery modalities or the “blended learning.”

Malaluan said that currently, DepEd is relying on the many best practices of schools as well as the experiences of schools and teachers.

“Madami kami ngayong focus group discussions with the teachers para magkaroon sila ng positive feedback ng best practices dahil bagong karanasan itong pure distance learning na ginawa natin (We now have many focus group discussions with the teachers so that they can will know of positive feedback of best practices because this pure distance learning is a new experience for us),” he added.

Malaluan said that DepEd is also looking into the experiences of the children to see “how it was done in the past and so we will see further improvements on how we deliver education based on the best practices that we see now.”

Given these, Malaluan said that DepEd is looking forward be “more improvements in how learning is delivered in this incoming school year 2021-2022.”

As approved by President Duterte, classes in basic education - particularly in public schools - are scheduled to start on Sept. 13.

However, distance or blended learning will remain in place since the President has yet to allow the conduct of limited face-to-face learning.
