Face-to-face classes will help address challenges, limitations of pure distance learning - DepEd

Recognizing the importance of in-person learning among students, an official of the Department of Education (DepEd) said that the agency has been preparing for the eventual resumption of face-to-face classes as it awaits the approval of President Duterte.

“Alam natin na iyong pag-combine ng face-to-face classes dito sa distance learning ay mahalaga para ma-address iyong mga challenges at limitations ng pure distance learning (We know that combining face-to-face classes with distance learning is important to address the challenges and limitations of pure distance learning),” DepEd Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Nepomuceno Malaluan said during the Laging Handa public briefing on Monday, July 19.

Malaluan said that DepEd also recognizes that giving the teachers the opportunity to see their students again and provide them with supplemental instruction directly will be a “big help” in the learning process.

Face-to-face classes, he added, will also address concerns on children's assessment which include remedial measures and their learning progress.

This set-up, Malaluan explained, will also “help students” who are having difficulties at home such as lack of equipment and facilities for distance learning as well as those without able adults who will guide and help with their studies at home.

“But as mentioned by the Secretary , due to public health concern, the decision whether we’ll be allowed - even as we are preparing - will be the decision by the President,” Malaluan added.

On July 16, DepEd announced that the opening of classes for School Year (SY) 2021-2022 will be on Sept. 13.

Without the approval of President Duterte to resume the conduct of face-to-face classes, DepEd said that blended learning will still be in place for the incoming school year.

However, DepEd said that it continues to prepare for the eventual resumption of face-to-face classes once approved by the President.
