DSWD to employees: Don't be victimized by scammers

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Monday, July 19, asked its employees to be "extra vigilant" and not to fall prey to scammers posing as agency officials.

The DSWD issued the stern warning after one of its employees in Agusan del Sur reported to the Central Office that someone introducing himself as DSWD Regional Director Cezario Joel Espejo texted and phoned him up on July 9 asking for 10 pre-paid cards amounting to P500 each.

The social welfare agency said it “advised its employees not to entertain calls or text messages from individuals posing to be officials of the Department.”

Espejo has already issued a clarificatory memorandum, describing the incident as a scam.

In the memorandum, Espejo clarified that he did not ask for pre-paid cards from anyone and that his personal and official mobile phones are under postpaid plans.

The DSWD said its employees should be “extra vigilant and immediately report to their supervisors if they encounter suspicious text messages and calls, misrepresenting DSWD officials.”

The DSWD vowed on July 9, to look into and “take appropriate action” against individuals who were posing as agency personnel, and were asking for one’s personal information in exchange for financial assistance.

It advised the public “to be extra vigilant” and not to entertain calls from these scammers.

The DSWD had warned beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) against scammers who were introducing themselves as DSWD personnel just to get their sensitive and personal information, such as their cash card numbers.
