Construction of regional science centrum in Caraga to be completed in October —DOST

The construction of the Caraga Regional Science Centrum which seeks to boost science, technology and innovation (STI) ecosystem in the region is being eyed to be completed by October this year.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the construction of the building is still ongoing and the Science Centrum is expected to be launched by December this year.

“The building/facility is still under construction and expected to be completed in October 2021 in time for the Science Centrum launching targeted in December 2021 as the highlight event for this year’s Caraga Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW),” he announced on the DOSTv Facebook page on Friday, July 16.

He said the project is jointly implemented by the DOST-Caraga, provincial government of Surigao del Norte, and the Department of Education (DepEd).

The program “aims to promote and develop a vibrant Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) ecosystem,” the DOST chief said.

“It will provide digital technology and other resources for a collaborative and interactive teaching-learning environment that complements the formal education system,” he added.

De la Peña cited that the DOST-Caraga has earmarked P9.39 million for the S&T interventions needed to operationalize the Science Centrum.

“The DOST–Caraga identifies the need to establish the Caraga Regional Science Centrum to prepare the region with the demands of the present and future industries,” he said.

He said the main features of the Science Centrum include science and technology (S&T) exhibits/galleries, makerspaces, and an integrated 21st Century Model Classroom.

He said the delivery of the first batch of equipment was made on March 29-30, while the delivery and transfer of the second batch of equipment and exhibits were made on July 8 to 9.
