Alex Eala and American partner Madison Sieg survived their unseeded rivals to capture the girls’ doubles title in the JA Milan 2021 Tennis Tour in Italy over the weekend.
The top-seeded Eala and Sieg rose from a second-set stumble and held their composure in the crunch to prevail over Croatia’s Lucija Ciric Bagaric and Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas, 6-4, 4-6, 13-11.
It was Eala’s second junior doubles crown this year after winning the French Open last June with Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva.
Eala and Sieg only dropped two sets throughout their campaign, beating Romania’s Stefania Bojica and Portugal’s Matilde Jorge, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round; Russians Anastasiia Gureva and Ekaterina Makiakova, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7, in the second; Russians Yaroslava Bartashevich and Ksenia Zaytseva, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals; and fifth seed Kira Pavlova and Diana Shnaider also of Russia, 6-3, 6-4, in the semis.
Eala guns for a twin title when she competes in the girls singles against Czech Republic’s Nikola Bartunkova.
Eala is also seeded No. 1 in the singles in this Grade A tournament.
