Cris Nievarez resumes Olympic training; Carlos Yulo finally enters Athletes' Village

Rower Cris Nievarez immediately buckled down to work in preparation for his Tokyo Olympics campaign after being seen training at the competition venue last Sunday.

In a series of photos posted by the Philippine Rowing Association on its Facebook page, the 21-year-old Nievarez can be seen testing the waters of the Sea Forest Waterway with coaches Ed Maerina and Shukhrat Ganiev.

Nievarez is no stranger to the venue as it was the same place where he competed and earned a berth in the Asian Olympic Qualification last May.

But the weather and water conditions during race day are expected to play big roles, and Nievarez is acclimatizing and studying new strategies anew in time for the competition.

Nievarez will be the first Filipino to plunge into action in the Games as he is scheduled to compete in the Heats on the morning of July 23, a few hours before the opening ceremony.

Meanwhile, world champion gymnast Carlos Yulo and coach Munehiro Kugimiya have already entered the Athletes Village to join with fellow Filipino Olympians.

In an Instagram Stories post, Yulo documented his journey going to the village with videos of the view outside their rooms.

Yulo has been based in Japan for the past years.

The bulk of the 19-strong PH delegation is expected to arrive Sunday.

As of this writing, weightlifter Erleen Ando and shooter Jayson Valdez have already joined the early batch of PH delegates.

Boxers Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, Irish Magno and Eumir Marcial arrived Saturday and have already shared their experiences inside the Athletes’ Village on their social media.
