The Manila city government will release the second dose vaccines from its own storage facility to be used as first dose starting on Monday (July 19) after two cases of the more transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant were detected in the city.

"We, the city government of Manila will release our second dose vaccines in our storage facility para gamitin sa first dose, 'yan po ang gagawin ko," Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso said on Friday.
The city government made the decision after the Department of Health (DOH) announced the detection of 16 new cases of the Delta variant in the country, 11 of them were considered as local cases.
The DOH reported earlier that two Delta variant cases were detected in Manila. One of the cases was tagged as “dead after being rushed to the emergency room of hospital last June 28.” The other case was tagged as recovered.
Domagoso assured the public that the second dose vaccines which will be used for the first dose will be replaced by the national government.
"Ang tanging makapagbibigay ng protection sa ating mga kababayan sabi sa mga itinala na pag-aaral mabakakunahan lamang ng first dose ang tao, and by that time may darating naman na second dose na ipinangako sa atin ng national government through Secretary Galvez (The only thing that can protect our people, according to studies, is to get them vaccinated even with first dose, and by that time we expect the arrival of the second dose which was promised by the national government through Secretary Galvez)," Domagoso said.
The Delta variant was first detected in India and it spread more easily and quickly than other variants.
Studies suggest that the current authorized vaccines work against the circulating variants, and the people who are fully vaccinated are protected from the Delta variant, according to the mayor.
Domogoso advised the public to be vaccinated immediately as it is the only protection against the Delta variant.
The local chief executive also ordered the Manila Health Department to get all the patients who are under home quarantine and bring them to the COVID-19 Field Hospital.
"I ordered the Manila Health Department to get all those patients, whether you like it or not, na nasa home quarantine. Bakit ho?, 'yung isa na nasa home quarantine kung dala niya ay Delta variant maaari niyang mabilis na ikalat at maikalat sa buong komunidad (Why?, if one person in home quarantine is a carrier of the Delta variant, there's a possibility that he/she can spread it easily and quickly to others and the whole community)," Domagoso said.
Domagoso reminded the public to continue to wear masks, drink their vitamins, and stay healthy.
