'Lapulapu' is restored Metropolitan Theater's first show

A new musical entitled "Lapulapu, Ang Datu ng Mactan" is set to be staged at the Metropolitan Theater (MET) next month, the first production to be mounted in the newly-renovated playhouse.

National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) chairperson Nick Lizaso said the production will be "a dramatic reminder of the Filipino people’s enduring and transcendent humanity."

" a testimony to the talents of the Filipino theater artist, and the maiden performance by which we welcome back the much-missed, and definitely beloved, Metropolitan Theater," he added.

Lizaso also handpicked Dexter Martinez Santos and Nicholas Pichay to lead the artistic team of the production as director and playwright, respectively.

Renowned tenor and theater actor Arman Ferrer will play the titular role Lapulapu and Tarech Tayec as Spanish conqueror Ferdinand Magellan.

They will be joined by Red Nuestro (Humabon), Cara Barredo (Reyna Juana), Natasha Cabrera (Babaylan), Paw Castillo (Enrique De Malacca), Randy Villarama (Juan Sebastian de Elcano), Nelsito Gomez (Pigafetta) and Ivan Niccolo Nery (Papa Alexander XI/Padre Pedro de Valderrama), among otherperformers.

The production will be staged at the MET on August 30 to commemorate the fifth centenary of the victory and humanity at Mactan. It is produced by the NCCA in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines as part of the National Quincentennial Commemoration.

Santos, who was also the director for the musical "Ang Huling El Bimbo," hopes this new work will be a testament to the Filipinos’ undying commitment to history, culture, and the arts.

"The overflowing generosity and commitment of the whole company made this journey possible – every moment during the whole process was heartfelt and meaningful," he added.
