Remembering the 1990 7.8-magnitude Luzon earthquake

On 16 July 1990, at 4:26 p.m., a magnitude 7.8 earthquake was strongly felt in Baguio City, Dagupan City, Cabanatuan City, and San Fernando City, La Union, and the rest of Luzon Island.

The powerful earthquake produced a 120 kilometer-long ground rupture along the Digdig segment of the Philippine Fault, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

This event claimed more than 1,200 lives, damaged infrastructure, and is considered the most destructive earthquake in the Philippines.
