LPA east of northern Luzon develops into tropical depression 'Fabian' -- PAGASA

The low pressure area (LPA) east of northern Luzon has developed into a tropical depression and was named "Fabian"--the sixth tropical cyclone inside the country's area of responsibility in 2021.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the LPA became of a tropical depression around 11 a.m., Friday, July 16.

It was located at 1,240 km east of Northern Luzon early Friday morning.

In its daily weather forecast, weather specialist Shelly Ignacio said the cyclone "may gradually enhance the southwest monsoon in the coming days."

She added that the weather disturbance may not make landfall but warned against rains over some parts of Luzon and Visayas due to the enhanced southwest monsoon or "habagat."

As of Friday morning, the habagat was already bringing cloudy conditions with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Zambales, Bataan, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga del Sur.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

PAGASA warned against possible flash floods or landslides during moderate to at times heavy rains or severe thunderstorms.
