Fundraiser launched for Macaraeg's Winter Olympic campaign

A fundraiser was arranged for the Winter Olympic campaign of Filipino speed skater Julian Macaraeg.

Macaraeg posted a gofundme link on his personal Facebook account in the hopes of getting more support and monetary funds for his competition expenses.

Per the fundraiser information, the 18-year-old speed skater will be engaging in a full-time training and two major trips to attend four International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup events.

Macaraeg, who competed in the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Dordrecht, Netherlands last March, will be traveling to Beijing, China and Nagoya, Japan in October and to Debrecen, Hungary and in Dordrecht anew in November.

"I would like to ask you if you could please help him (Macaraeg) and support his training and competition expenses," wrote Carole Moore.

"Any amount will definitely help Julian achieve his goals. It is not an easy route to go to the Winter Olympics, but to try and to be a part of it is already an incredible experience for him and an honor to be representing NYC (New York City), the northeast USA skating community and his country the Philippines."

Macaraeg, who recently got into University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), continues to train at the Flushing Meadows Speedskating Club in New York.

He is the first Filipino speed skater to compete in the Winter Youth Olympics.

The teen athlete is also the lone Filipino and one of the two contenders from tropical countries in the field alongside India’s Akash Aradhya during the world championships.

Last April, Michael Martinez, the first figure skater from Southeast Asia to qualify and compete in the Winter Olympics and the Youth Winter Olympics, also launched a gofundme fundraiser for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
