Miriam College Communication Dep't: Students are empowered to be responsible truth-tellers

The Miriam College (MC) Department of Communication has aired concern over claims that the college's students were allegedly given additional points by their teachers when they participate in political rallies.

The Department of Communication said it does not require participation in rallies and other forms of protest, however, students are "encouraged to think independently and critically and to make informed decisions."

"The Miriam College Department of Communication upholds holistic education goes beyond the classroom setting. Students have the freedom to participate in external activities to allow them to engage in various discourses in society," it said in a statement released on July 14.

"As future communicators, our students are empowered to be responsible truth-tellers. We uphold the rights enshrined in the Constitution, including freedom of expression and the right of people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances."

This after Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Assistant Secretary and National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) spokesperson for Youth Affairs Celine Pialago claimed that "joining rallies was a class requirement."

Pialago, an alumna of the Department, said during a virtual event hosted by the NTF-ELCAC that during her time as a college student, she was very active in joining rallies as they "give additional points in classes."
