Come to me

REFLECTIONS TODAY
Through Moses, the LORD God presents himself to the Israelites as the God of their fathers, “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” (Ex 3:16). He is concerned about how they are being mistreated by the Egyptians and so will lead them out of their misery in Egypt. In short, the Israelites are to come to him for deliverance. They are to follow Moses whom he sends to guide them to the land promised to their fathers—the land where they will have rest and security.
Now, Jesus invites his disciples and all of us, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Rest does not mean not to carry anything at all; we still have to carry Jesus’ yoke. We still have to face life’s burdens. The wooden yoke used on an animal helps it to carry the burden. When we take the yoke of Jesus, learning from his humility and meekness, we find things easy. We go directly to his heart. All other prescriptions of the Law, cultural and societal, give way to love. And because Jesus shares with us our burden as we take his yoke, we can also say that our yoke is easy and our burden light.
GOSPEL • Mt 11:28-30
Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”
