WGM Janelle Mae Frayna keeps bid alive in FIDE Women's World Cup

Woman Grandmaster Janelle May Frayna pulled the rug from under Hoang Tranh Trang of Hungary to stay alive in the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2021 in Sochi, Russia Tuesday night.

Frayna, 24, smashed Hoang after 41 moves of a Dutch Defense to tie their opening-round matchup at 1-1 and force a two-game playoff tiebreaker Wednesday night.

The victory boosted Frayna after suffering a 33-move defeat in a Queen’s Pawn game against Hoang Monday.

“I am glad that I was able to level the score against her (Hoang) by winning the second game,” Frayna said in a Facebook post early Wednesday.

“Honestly in Round 1, I was really mad at myself for spoiling an equal end game. I thought I could create a breakthrough in the pawn ending.”

Frayna hopes “to play great chess tomorrow” and thanked her supporters for the well wishes.

Her recent feat made up for the painful exits of teammates Daniel Quizon, Paulo Bersamina and Michael Concio Jr.

Quizon drew with Canada’s Evgeny Bareev in 35 moves of a French Defense to yield their matchup, 1.5-0.5, while Bersamina lost to India’s Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa in a similar 1.5-0.5 score after halving a point in 36 moves of a King’s Indian encounter in their second duel.

Concio, for his part, absorbed a 2-0 defeat to India’s Chithambaram Aravindh in 40 moves of a Caro-kaan game in their second matchup.
