MMDA shares two solid waste management solutions to Makati folk; find out what they are

True to its commitment, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) brought its mobile material recovery facility (MMRF) to Barangays San Isidro and Pio del Pilar in Makati City on Wednesday, July 14 as part of its one-two punch against the solid waste problem in the metropolis.

The MMRF allows residents to collect waste and get equivalent points for the it, which will be duly recorded in their Ecosavers Passboo. The points can be trade to grocery items such as canned goods, instant noodles, and rice which can be redeemed during the MMRF Market Day.

It is for this reason that the MMRF is also called "Recyclable Mo, Palit Grocery Ko (Trade in groceries for recyclables)."

The other half of the MMDA's solid waste management solution is the Takakura home composting method, which it also taught to Makati residents Wednesday.

“These initiatives are meant to institutionalize a system for barangays that will lessen generated garbage which eventually end up at esteros and other waterways,” MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos said during the event.

The MMDA envisions the conduct of the Takakura home composting method on a community scale. It is basically composting via the use of fermentation solutions derived from a Japanese urban-based technology.

Abalos revealed that the MMDA is already coordinating with other non-government organizations with similar programs and initiatives to further intensify the agency’s solid waste campaign and bring it to more barangays in Metro Manila.

“Through these partnerships, we provide residents more options and wider reach to recycle their waste, promote segregation, and exchange it into something that would benefit the community,” he added.

Abalos also reminded the public not to indiscriminately dump their waste on streets and waterways.
