ISP: This DOST program turns students' inventiveness into technologies

The Department of Science and Technology-Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) has vowed to continue empowering elementary, high school and college students through its Invent School Program or ISP amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The DOST-TAPI, along with DOST-V urged academic institutions to avail of the program, which serves as a platform for the youth to awaken their true ingenuity by stimulating their interest for creativity and inventiveness.

“Because of the pandemic, DOST-TAPI explored online platforms and tailor-fitted its training to deliver the same quality of innovation-inspiring activities and discussions going beyond the traditional face-to-face workshops and seminars,” read the statement posted by DOST on its Facebook page on Wednesday.

“ISP aims to stimulate students’ interest in creativity and inventiveness and create awareness on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and protection, leading to the creation of technologies that shall become their enterprises that serve as a starting ground for future Filipino inventors,” it added.

The Institute said ISP also seeks to promote and establish new young inventors’ associations or clubs that are expected to intensify inventive activities in the campuses; and to encourage students to pursue science-related courses leading to a career that would make them professional inventors and scientists in the future.

“Like many other programs implemented by the department, ISP has been calibrated to cope with the demands of the pandemic without sacrificing the caliber of its services,” it said.

Invent School seminar-workshop usually covers topics on Creativity, Creative Thinking, Ideation Tools and Techniques, Invention Development, Prototyping and Awareness, Prior Arts Search, and Basic Patent Drafting. Accompanied by their advisers, around 40-50 students usually attend the seminar workshops.

The DOST noted that since 2011, ISP has been conducted in the Bicol region, benefiting the students in Legazpi City; Virac, Catanduanes; Guinobatan, Albay; and Nabua, Camarines Sur.

“Continuing with its digital shift in 2021 along with new and improved content and delivery, TAPI—along with DOST-V—encourages academic institutions to avail of the program,” it said.
