Angel Cacnio, noted Filipino visual artist, passes away

Multi-awarded Filipino artist Angel Cacnio succumbed to pneumonia on July 13, 2021, at age 90. News of his death was announced by his son, sculptor Ferdinand Cacnio, through a Facebook post.

"Angel Cacnio will be remembered by many as a prolific painter, masterfully capturing various Filipino genre subjects," Ferdinand posted. "To us, he is Dad, Papa, Lolo, or Tiyo Angel—simple, kind, and God-fearing."

Born in 1931, Angel was the artistic pride of Malabon City. He married Amelia and eventually built a family of artists. His talents were evident at such a young age and were honed when he took up Fine Arts at University of the Philippines (UP).

Among his best works are his paintings "Tatlong Sabungero"(1953) and "The Capture of Mabini" (1964), which earned him top honors. In the '80s, his works jumped off from canvases to coins and bills as his designs were used by the Central Bank for the 50 and 25 centavo coins and for the 20 and 100 peso bills.

Angel also co-founded various organizations such as Sining Tambobong Foundation and Malabon Tourism. His house in the city also serves as an art gallery featuring his masterpieces and the works of Malabon's artists.

According to Ferdinand, his father's wake is at the Diamond 1 Chapel of Loyola Memorial in Marikina. The day of interment will be on Friday, July 16, 2021.
