REFLECTIONS TODAY
Jesus, in turn, is disappointed at the towns of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum. These towns near the Sea of Galilee have been recipients of Jesus’ preaching and mighty deeds or miracles. Jesus calls for repentance or change of heart as the proper disposition in welcoming the Kingdom of God. And yet the inhabitants have not repented, going about their daily life as if the time of God’s visitation is not happening. Their minds and hearts remain closed. Jesus says that if the same message of God’s coming is preached to the cities of Tyre and Sidon, the pagan inhabitants there would have repented long ago, like what the Ninevites did at the preaching of Jonah (Jon 3:6-10).
GOSPEL • MATTHEW 11:20-24
Jesus began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And as for you, Capernaum: Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld. For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
