ULAP blames lack of vaccine allocation for COVID-19 surge in the provinces

Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) president and Quirino Governor Dakila Cua appealed to the national government to provide more COVID-19 vaccines to the provinces to expedite the inoculation of individuals under the A4 category.

He explained that the delay in vaccine allocation in the provinces is causing an upsurge in cases.

Those in the A4 category include private sector employees who are required to work outside their places of residence; employees of government agencies, government corporations and local government units (LGUs) and informal sector workers who are self-employed who may be required to work outside their residences and those in private households.

“Ang pakiusap namin bigyan ng more allocation (COVID-19 vaccines) yung provinces, number one. And number two, the NCR + 8 has been authorized to inoculate A4. Sa mga probinysa hindi pa po. Sana mapayagan (Our plea is to give more allocation to provinces, that is number one. And number two, the NCR + 8 has been authorized to inoculate A4. In provinces, not yet. I hope that this will be allowed),’’ Cua said.

The ULAP chief added that the vaccination rollout should be shifted to the provinces now with the COVID-19 surge in these areas.

In June, Iloilo City Mayor Geronimo Treñas blamed the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Western Visayas with the bulk of the allocation of the vaccine doses going to the NCR-plus areas.

The OCTA Research in its July 9 report identified the areas of Davao City, Iloilo, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Baguio and Tagum as areas of concern due to the skyrocketing COVID-19 cases in these locations. (Chito A. Chavez)
