Doctors administering COVID-19 vaccine booster shots could face sanctions, DOH warns

The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday, July 12, warned of sanctions against doctors found administering patients with booster shots.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire issued the warning after San Juan City Representative Ronaldo Zamora reportedly admitted that he received four doses of vaccines against coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

It was reported that the lawmaker got two more vaccine doses as booster shots, after receiving two doses of Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccine, as advised by his physician.

"Hindi kami na-inform (We were not informed) about this matter. This was something that they did between the individual and his physician,” Vergeire said in a virtual press briefing.

“Mixing and matching booster doses ay hindi pa narerekomenda ngayon ng Department of Health at ng mga eksperto dahil hindi pa kumpleto ang ating ebidensya (is not yet recommended by the Department of Health and by experts because our evidence is insufficient),” she added.

On Monday, the DOH reiterated that it is not yet recommending the use of COVID-19 vaccine booster shots as there is still insufficient evidence that it will be safe.

With this development, the Health department advised physician and medical professionals to follow protocols set by the government which would ensure the safety and efficacy of the vaccines.

Last month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted an emergency use authorization to the Department of Health (DOH) to accept the donations of Sinopharm vaccine.

“Tandaan natin na meron tayong emergency use authority galign sa FDA at kung ano ang nakalagay sa EUA yan ang magiging gamit ng bakuna (Let us remember that we have an emergency use authority from the FDA and what is stated in the EUA will be the basis for the use of the vaccine),” Vergeire said.

“Mag iingat tayo dahil kapag meron tayong violations sa mga ganito ay maaari tayong magkaroon ng sanctions (We must be careful because when we have violations of such things we could face sanctions),” she added.
