Baguio-based strawberry growers get huge production boost from DA

Strawberry growers from an agricultural village in Baguio City are looking to produce tens of thousands of strawberry runners by the end of the year.

Members of the San Andreas Strawberry Growers Association (SASG) of Bilis, Sto. Tomas Central hope to achieve this goal by using the four twin tunnel greenhouses provided to them by the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-CAR) through its high-value crops development program (HVCDP).

Funded under the Bayanihan 2 law, the greenhouses are worth P250,000 each.

According to Sammy Lang-ay, president of SASG, the utilization of greenhouse will boost their production of strawberry runners. He said the DA-CAR has also committed to provide 500 clean tissue-cultured strawberry plantlets coming from the partnership project with Benguet State University.

Each greenhouse is expected to propagate a minimum of 30,000 strawberry runners. These planting materials will be sold to strawberry-producing municipalities in Benguet and Mt. Province, Lang-ay said.

He added that a portion of the profit will be set aside as funding for the 23-member association. Some of the planting materials will also be distributed to nearby farmers for reproduction.

Meanwhile, another SASG member in Rosa Masing noted that the greenhouse will allow the farmers to produce strawberry runners all-year-round and reduce losses due to pest, typhoons, and other extreme weather conditions.

She emphasized that proper management through the intervention of DA-CAR is needed to produce quality strawberries. “We are very grateful to DA-CAR for entrusting our association with these greenhouses, many farmers will surely benefit from this government intervention,” she added.

Aside from the greenhouse, the department also provided fertilizers, water pumps, and capability-building training to the farmer-members to beef up their production.

Under the Bayanihan 2 or to Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, the department will provide a total of 16 greenhouses to increase the production of strawberry runners in Benguet and Mt. Province
