Robredo asks DepEd: If World Bank used old data, what's the new report on PH education?
Vice President Leni Robredo is hoping that the Department of Education (DepEd) will release the latest report on the Philippines’ student learning assessments to give the current status of the country’s education sector.

While DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said the data used by the World Bank is not updated, Robredo noted she has not released new data on Filipino students’ learning profiency to know if they are improving.
“Iyong pagsabi ng DepEd na luma iyong data, wala silang binigay na bago. So ako iyon ang hinahanap ko, ano kaya iyong bago?
(What DepEd said the data is old, but they didn’t provide a new one. So that’s what I am looking for, what is new?),” she said on her Sunday radio show.
“Kasi kapag lumabas iyong bago dun natin makikita kung saan ang improvement, kung meron (Once the new data comes out, that’s when we’ll see if there are improvements),” Robredo stressed.

“Sana magkaroon ng parang (I hope there’s an) update based on the latest data para mas alam natin kung saan tayo ngayon (so we know where we are now),” she added.
Filipino students will still continue with their online classes this coming school year since face-to-face classes are still not allowed because of the COVID-19 restrictions.
The vice president said that because students haven’t been physically in school in the past year, the problems have further “exacerbated” due to the difficulties in online learning.
“Sana mali ako (I hope I am wrong),” Robredo added.

The vice president lamented that DepEd used to have the biggest allocation from the national budget. However, from 2018 to 2021, it’s the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) which had the biggest allocation.
In 2018, she noted DPWH was allocated with P637.8 billion, higher than DepEd’s P553.3-billion budget. Robredo also compared the two agencies’ budget in 2019 when the DPWH was given P549 billion while the DepEd only got P501 billion.
This year, the DPWH has P694-billion budget compared to DepEd that has P557 billion to spend for education, Robredo added.
Since last year, Robredo has advocated for starting face-to-face classes in communities where the virus transmission is low. She also established the Community Learning Hubs to allow those without resources at home to use the internet and to meet with their teachers who can guide them in the lessons.
