Bayan official: PH education system has long been in crisis

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) secretary general Renato Reyes Jr. has expressed his support for Vice President Leni Robredo’s suggestion that a crisis in education must be declared.

During her weekly radio show, Robredo proposed that the government must declare an “education crisis” in a bid to prioritize the efforts on improving the country’s education system.

“The Vice President is correct. The education system has in fact long been in crisis,” Reyes said in a tweet on Sunday, July 11.

“This has worsened due to the pandemic, underfunded distance learning, and failure of the government to resume safe face-to-face classes,” he added.

The vice president’s suggestion came after the World Bank (WB) apologized for the “inadvertent release” of its education report that said the country’s education system is lagging.

“Dapat magdeklara na tayo krisis sa edukasyon para pagtuunan ng malaking pansin (We should declare an education crisis so we can focus on improving it),” Robredo said on Sunday.

The WB issued the apology following the demand of Education Secretary Leonor Briones who called out the financial institution for using “old data” in its report which “insulted and shamed” the Philippines.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has already formally acknowledged the apology issued by the WB concerning the premature publication of its report.
