4.7-magnitude quake jolts Sultan Kudarat

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake has rocked Sultan Kudarat on Sunday, July 11, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake occurred around 2:45 a.m. and traced its epicenter at 14 kilometers southwest of Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat.

The earthquake occurred at 55 kilometers beneath the epicenter.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was felt as a "moderately strong" shaking at Intensity IV in Kalamansig, Palimbang, and Lebak in Sulta Kudarat.

It was also felt as a "weak" tremor at Intensity III in Cotabato City.

Phivolcs' instruments also recorded the earthquake at Intensity III in Kiamba, Sarangani, Intensity II in Zamboanga City, and Intensity I in Malungon, Sarangani and General Santos City.

The quake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault in the area.

Aftershocks and damage to structures are not expected due to this earthquake.
