PHILRADS to use traditional bayong in relief packaging

Instead of using plastic bags, the Philippine Relief and Development Services Inc. (PHILRADS) will be making use of the traditional bayong in its relief packs.

The group decided to shift to a more eco-friendly packaging so as not to further contribute to the growing number of plastic wastes.

"For 40 years, PHILRADS has been very faithful in serving the people by providing their basic needs especially during emergency and disaster responses and it cannot be denied that during these times, PHILRADS has been using plastic bags for its relief packs," PHILRADS said in a Facebook post.

The group added that this has contributed to the growing number of plastic wastes.

"We have recognized the need for change and therefore we are committed to helping our environment through our creation care advocacy. Our first step is shifting into more eco-friendly relief packaging," PHILRADS said.

"We are introducing our traditional bayong relief bags which are hand-woven and made out of pandan leaves," it added.

Aside from being environment friendly and decreases the use of harmful plastics, PHILRADS said, the traditional bayong is also reusable, it supports bayong weavers by providing them a sustainable livelihood, and it is cost-effective since it is proven to last longer than the other reusable bags.

Established in 1980, PHILRADS is the relief and development arm of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC) to serve the poor and needy.
