Gilas coach Tab Baldwin far from satisfied after gallant stand vs Serbia

Coach Tab Baldwin refused to look at silver linings even after Gilas Pilipinas came so close to scoring a monumental upset of host Serbia in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Gilas rallied from 16 down to even take the lead in the fourth quarter before falling 83-76 early Thursday, July 1 Manila time at the Aleksandar Nikolic Hall in Belgrade.

While everyone was elated with the way Gilas fought, Baldwin lamented on the team’s shortcomings.

“A lot of people will look at this as some sort of a moral victory. You know, I’ve been in this game for such a long time and I just don’t believe in those,” Baldwin said during the virtual post-match press conference.

The Filipino cagers missed eight of their final nine shots after taking a 74-73 lead on RJ Abarrientos’ layup with 3:50 to go, with 7-foot-3 Dallas Mavericks center Boban Marjanovic hitting key shots to help Serbia pull off an escape act.

“We had some chances late, we missed good open looks,” Baldwin said. “I think Ange missed a couple, SJ missed one and Justine Baltazar missed one as well. They were really good looks and they would have put Serbia under even more pressure that they were under late in the game.

“But sometimes, particularly with the young team, developing team, the occasion could be bigger than we are but that’s what the learning process is all about,” added Baldwin.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Baldwin wouldn’t convey his appreciation with the way his young players performed against a Serbian team that despite playing the OQT without NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic and missing Miami Heat center Nemanja Blejica and Euroleague MVP Vasilije Micic for the match due to injuries.

But Baldwin also said that Gilas is as good as its last game as focus now shifts on facing Dominican Republic early Friday, July 2 Manila time for a spot in the Belgrade OQT semis.

“I was very proud of the effort today. I wanna play better than we played and I know we can play better, and we will play better. But certainly the flow of the game was competitive and then we put a great effort.

“(Apart) from a little bit of composure late, I thought we answered most of the questions that were asked to us by Serbia today,” Baldwin ended.
