DOST donates P500K worth of equipment to put up bakery inside Manila City Jail

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has partnered with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for livelihood projects for the inmates of the Manila City Jail (MCJ)

Initially, BJMP-MCJ warden Supt. Elena Rocamora said the DOST donated P541,500 worth of equipment that will expedite the operation of bread and pastry making at the facility.

BJMP National Capital Region (NCR)-Director Chief Supt. Luisito Munoz and Jose Patalinghug of the DOST-NCR signed the MOA at the BJMP-NCR office in Quezon City last June 28.

Rocamora thanked the DOST for the donation, stressing that the new equipment will speed up the mixing process of dough, increase baking capacity and improve the food safety of the PDL-workers.

She added that the expansion and improvement of the MCJ Bakery will raise sales and productivity for the PDL consumers inside the facility.

The BJMP-MJC chief disclosed that prior to the arrival of the new equipment, the bakery has already been earning an average of P20,000 a day with the customers mostly the detainees confined at the different cells.

As of July 1, the MCJ has a jail population of 3,644 composed of several gangs such as the Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Commando, Bahalan Na, Batang City Jail and the Cuerna or a cell for inmates who have no tattoos or gang affiliation.

Rocamora revealed that all the PDL groups have been supporting the jail's bread house where the bakery’s income is used to finance PDL livelihood programs and fund their weekly feeding projects.

Expected to be full-operational on July 15, the new bakery is expected to attract more markets from nearby facilities such as the Quezon City Male and Female Dorms that will increase sales by more or less 50 percent.
